Losing a career or becoming disconnected from the workforce can be one of life's most difficult transitions. Whether you've been laid off, accepted an early retirement package, experienced a prolonged job search, or simply found yourself unable to return to meaningful employment, the emotional impact can be profound. Many people experience grief, loss of identity, reduced confidence, financial stress, social isolation, and uncertainty about what comes next.

HopeStart's Rebuilding Purpose After Career Loss group provides a safe, therapist-led space for individuals navigating the emotional and psychological challenges of career transition and labour market detachment. Led by Marsaye Treen, Registered Psychotherapist and HopeStart's Group Therapy Lead, and supported by Matthew Wadlin, Service Director, this group offers compassionate support, meaningful connection, and practical strategies for rebuilding resilience and rediscovering purpose.

Through facilitated discussion and evidence-based therapeutic approaches, participants will explore topics such as:

  • Processing the grief and loss associated with career change or unemployment

  • Rebuilding confidence, self-worth, and identity beyond work

  • Managing anxiety, stress, depression, and uncertainty about the future

  • Navigating changes in relationships, finances, and daily routine

  • Finding meaning, purpose, and hope during times of transition

  • Developing healthy coping strategies and emotional resilience

  • Connecting with others who understand the challenges of career loss

Marsaye creates a supportive, non-judgmental environment where participants can openly explore the emotional impact of career transition, while Matthew brings insight into the realities of today's labour market and the challenges many individuals face when trying to re-establish meaningful careers. Together, they provide a balanced approach that acknowledges both the personal and practical aspects of this life transition.

If work has ended before you were ready—or you're struggling to find your place again—you don't have to navigate the journey alone. This group offers understanding, support, and a path toward renewed confidence, purpose, and well-being.
