Supporting Families Affected by Senior Scams
When Someone You Love Is Being Scammed
This group will run on Wednesday Evenings, from 6:00pm until 8:30pm, beginning September 9, 2026, until October 14, 2026 (inclusive). Please click HERE to register.
Discovering that an aging parent, grandparent, or loved one has been targeted by a scam can be heartbreaking. Many families find themselves caught between wanting to protect someone they care about and watching that person become increasingly isolated, defensive, or unwilling to accept help. Conversations often lead to conflict, trust may begin to erode, and family members are left feeling overwhelmed, frustrated, guilty, or powerless.
HopeStart's Supporting Families Affected by Senior Scams group provides a safe, therapist-led space for family members and caregivers navigating the emotional impact of financial exploitation. Led by Marsaye Treen, Registered Psychotherapist and HopeStart's Group Therapy Lead, and supported by Matthew Wadlin, Service Director and Registered Social Service Worker, this supportive group offers practical guidance, emotional support, and connection with others facing similar challenges.
Through facilitated discussion and evidence-based therapeutic approaches, participants will explore topics such as:
Understanding why older adults become vulnerable to scams and financial exploitation
Navigating difficult conversations with empathy while maintaining healthy boundaries
Coping with feelings of grief, anger, guilt, and helplessness
Rebuilding trust and preserving important family relationships
Responding to resistance, secrecy, and social isolation
Supporting a loved one while also caring for your own emotional well-being
Learning practical strategies and community resources to help reduce future risk
Marsaye creates a compassionate, non-judgmental environment where participants can share their experiences, gain perspective, and develop tools for navigating one of the most challenging situations families can face.
If someone you love is being scammed—or has been financially exploited—you don't have to carry the emotional burden alone. This group offers understanding, guidance, and hope for families working to protect both their loved one and their relationship with them.
